During the summer, before each school year starts it's a good idea to get things organized. To teach good organizational skills for students, the home environment should be well organized. Taking inventory of items in the home are an excellent way to keep life well organized and clutter free. Kids should go through all their old toys with their parents and decide which ones they just don't need any more. They may have grown out of some toys or some toys may be just be too old and worn out to play with anymore. Toys that are still good can be donated to charity and others that can't be used anymore should be thrown away.

Before going out and buying a whole new wardrobe for the new school year, parents can go through all old clothes with their children. Often children will have outgrown their clothes from the previous year, therefore, take the time to give away and throw out old clothes. Decide which old books, textbooks, art pieces and projects should be filed away some place and kept as mementos for the future. Look through last year's school supplies and make a list of what new supplies children need. Throw out old things that can't be used anymore and keep what can still be used. This type of inventory will teach organizing skills for student. Buy binders and files for each subject and teach children how to organize their assignments. Well organized binders would have a place for homework due the same night, homework due by the end of the week and long-term projects. When organizational skills for students are instilled properly, students will develop good habits and never forget anything nor hand in any assignments late.

Keep school calendars on the refrigerator so that important dates will not be overlooked. A place with files or folders can be made at home so that letters from school have a place and will not get lost. Well organized homes are essential for learning organization skills for students. Writing utensils, art supplies, musical instruments, music and other school items should all have a proper place at home. Having these good organizational skills for students in their home life will also be reflected in study habits. Children will learn to date things making it easy to keep track of. As well categorizing in other aspects of life will come easier, heading an advantage when note-taking and completing assignments.

Keeping up organizational skills for students is quite a challenge. Preparing for school and taking inventory may be quite exciting, but once school begins keeping an organized schedule, a tidy room and neat desktop may not be easy. If quite a strict but balanced routine is made and followed it will become much easier. Usually after about two weeks or so, an organized schedule will be habit and no longer feel like a strict routine but rather part of a organized everyday life.
